Is it ok to mix and match your bedroom furniture? Yes and absolutely! All matching bedroom sets are a thing of the past! Layering in, and mixing and matching different furniture pieces gives more fun and interest to your bedroom. How do you mix and match your bedroom furniture? While still making the bedroom style make sense without matching room sets?

Unless everything matching is only thing that makes sense to you design wise (then, you're all sorted). Mixing and matching furniture can bring up its own set of issues. Pulling and piecing different styles and colours together to create one cohesive look. That works! The whole point of the mixing and matching style is that it's supposed to look totally different and unique to anyone else's space. A look that's personal and effortless… in theory. But where do you start?

Here are some top tips for mixing and matching furniture styles for the bedroom…

1. Start With One Piece

Already have a piece of furniture you love? It's best start with that first piece and work from that. Especially if it's an antique or a second hand piece. Something that is one off is better to be worked around first off. It'll be a lot easier to get buy pieces around what you already intend to use for the bedroom. Rather than the other way around!

What better way to start off your bedroom around a totally special and unique piece? This way you can pick up on the style and other details that you can use to determine other pieces for the room.

2. Match

Some things can match! If you're just beginning to experiment with mixing up furniture styles then use this tip to start off with. The trick is not to try and match the bigger items together as the bigger items you see first and it will look too obvious. Matching nightstands is the best option to begin with. Nightstands are smaller in proportion to the bed, or a wardrobe. As long as the bed is central and of a different style and finish it will break the pair up.

Saying that, you do not have to match your nightstands. Even if you're creating a symmetrical and balanced bedroom the nightstands can be of a similar style. It doesn't have to be an exact pairing.

3. The Bed

The bed is the whole purpose for the bedroom so it should be the focal point! In other words it should stand out so try and avoid exactly matching the bed to any other piece in the room. It's going to look a bit boring otherwise. If you have wood or metal furniture pieces an upholstered bed will break up the hard finishes and soften the space a bit.

4. Vary

Mix up the shape, styles and materials of some the furniture pieces. Don't be afraid to mix round shapes with rectangular in the bedroom. As well as the styles. Remember you can mix heavier pieces with more lightweight and airy looking furniture pieces.

5. Repetition

Repetition not matching. Find a shape, a finish, a colour, a texture that you can be found in a few of the pieces that you choose for your bedroom. It could be a curved shape or a hardware finish that you like on the furniture. By repeating an element in the some of the pieces it brings the whole space together.

If you've chosen a different material for the dresser you might want to repeat the hardware or colour to another furniture piece in the bedroom. Even though some of key furniture pieces will be different they still should relate to each other.

A Balancing Act

When it comes to mixing and matching styles it's all a bit of a balancing act. Too few of details and it feels like something's missing. Too much of the same is uninteresting. Look at the size of your room and the proportions of your pieces to figure if you're leaning too much to one side or the other. But once you have it sussed it will feel right and look the style will be well balanced!

Using the mixing and matching bedroom styles will give you some flexibility later down the line when changing up rooms around the home too.
